The Hydrant – Not a commonly drilled upon resource but is an extremely important component of success on the fireground. Simply put, if you don’t have enough water you will burn a building, or buildings, into the foundation. Tonight, volunteers with Tunxis Hose Company #1, in Unionville, conducted a drill on hydrants in two neighborhoods that are in their first due response area. Both areas have unique difficulties as well as benefits when it comes to hydrants. New and veteran members ran through multiple scenarios to make them have to think outside of the box, work on communication between crews, and utilize resources on each rig’s iPad. For these scenarios, the company officers stepped out of the front seat and took a back seat position, allowing firefighters to sit in the officer seat and be tested on the fireground decision making process. The company officers were able to on the role of a mentor, helping coach the firefighter in the officer seat.
